THE DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE
The Department of Medicine within the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) Zimbabwe is one of the cornerstones of medical education, research, and healthcare delivery. It is dedicated to training future general practitioners and physicians, conducting cutting-edge research, and providing exemplary patient care.
Undergraduate medical students pass through this department through 38 weeks of clinical rotations and in class lectures. Our first encounter with the students is in their third year as they undergo Clinical Clerkship where they learn how to clerk, examine, and present patients. The second encounter is during their fourth year, Medicine I, and the third encounter in their final year, Medicine II. The main objective of these Medicine rotations is to teach students to be able to list the important causes of each presenting complaint, to describe the clinical features that help differentiate the important causes each complaint, to formulate and interpret a list of relevant investigations that would assist in determining the diagnosis.
The department is staffed by a diverse team of experienced specialist physicians who are experts in their respective fields. These physicians are not only dedicated educators but also active researchers, contributing to the advancement of medical knowledge through their scholarly work. They mentor students and residents, providing guidance and support as they navigate their medical training and professional development.
In addition to its educational mission, the Department of Medicine is committed to improving healthcare outcomes through clinical excellence and research innovation. Faculty members collaborate with healthcare institutions and community organizations to address local health challenges, conduct clinical research, and implement evidence-based practices to enhance patient care.
Overall, the Department plays a vital role in shaping the next generation of doctors, advancing medical science, and promoting health and wellness in the community. It embodies the university's commitment to excellence in medical education, research, and service to humanity.
