THE Vice-Chancellor, Prof Eng. Mqhele Dlodlo, welcomed first year students during the 2019/2020 Orientation at the Bulawayo Amphi-Theatre on Friday the 3rd of May.
Prof. Eng. Dlodlo congratulated the freshman for choosing NUST, which has been ranked as one of the best universities in several surveysconducted within and outside Zimbabwe.
He pointed out that NUST is an appealing brand which should be kept attractive at all times. Therefore, since the students have joined the family, their actions or behavior will shape how the brand is viewed hence they should positively represent NUST.
“In your stay at NUST you should engage in meaningful extracurricular activities that improve you as an individual to excel in your talents,” Prof. Eng. Dlodlo said.
According to Prof. Eng. Dlodlo, students should aim to create innovations and projects that will benefit their communities. He gave an illustration of the founding Vice-Chancellors’, Prof. Phineas Makhurane aim of leaving a legacy which he accomplished by making NUST a valuable link between communities and public/private sectors.
Students were also advised to value the essence of time when they are studying. Prof Eng. Dlodlo propelled that during course of the semester, students should manage their lectures and studies.He advised studentsto use their spare time to participate in productive activities.
The orientation was also graced by the presence of NUST members representing different Departments which include Students Affairs Division, ICTs, Security, Communication and Marketing. Representatives from these various departments explained the services offered by each department and how students can make use of them.
Acting Dean of Students, Ms. S. Magida, informed students that Students Affairs Division is there to support students in transitioning to varsity life and any situation they might face. She added that students should be open to the counselors who are available to help anyone going through depression.
Prof. Eng. Dlodlo in his closing remarks said: “Welcome to NUST family, your home away from home.” He added that he is a father figure to them and they should feel free to consult him.
